Yes We Can

200812162351.jpg

The other day, I was informed I write a lousy "ask" letter. In fact, it was recommended in no uncertain terms that I go back and re-read the mountain of Obama "ask" letters still cluttering my email client. So I did. And yes, it's true, I'm not a good asker. So I'm starting over. With shorter sentences. To see if I can't do a better job.

You see, we've got a critical, if not completely obvious job on our hands.

Even though the right-wing has recently been sliced-and-diced, it's still pretty good at leafletting the public square. And, these folks are especially good at doing it in pictures. ...especially when the media is helping them out with it.

But four years into this mission, we are not exactly passive consumers anymore. We've learned to unpack those pictures. And we're also learning to offer up other pictures -- from photographers who are first-hand witnesses, and aren't beholden to the corporate sponsors.

Your donation today will help cover critical operating costs and time-sensitive photographer contributions -- resources which are needed immediately for us to keep a check on those newswires, raise hell about biased or stereotyped pictures, pull the best eyes and minds together to discuss and take apart Madison Ave.- level visual spin, and otherwise keep our team shooting.

As the media visually trivializes our election gains and the right-wing pictures itself on the mend, won't you help sponsor our leading role as a guardian when it comes to visual politics?

200812162353.jpg

At The BAG, it's the resources we have on hand going into 2009 which will determine how great a difference we can make. Besides comprehensive coverage of Campaign '08's visual hype and stereotypes, our contributers have been at the key scenes for years now -- including the trials of New Orleans and the touch points of the propaganda war.

Would you help underwrite Alan Chin's room for the night, or a parking spot that isn't miles...

NEW ELEMENT DISCOVERED:

Lawrence Livermore Laboratories has discovered the heaviest element yet known to science.

The new element, Governmentium (Gv), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.

These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.

Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert; however, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from four days to four years to complete.

Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2- 6 years; It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.

In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.

This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass.

When catalyzed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium, an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.

Glowing spirit, pure heart

Daily Reading for December 6 • Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, c. 342

An example of the Faith and a life of humility,

as a teacher of abstinence

you did inspire and lead your flock

and through your truthfulness of your deeds

were exalted by greatness through your humility

uplifting all and by poverty gaining wealth.

Father and hierarch Nicholas intercede

with Christ our God that our souls be saved.

The Apolytikion or Troparion (Hymn) of Saint Nicholas.

The four corners of the world glorify you

As a knight of the powerful Faith,

The Faith of God, the true Faith.

From the cradle he was devoted to God,

From the cradle until the end;

And God glorified him—

His faithful Nicholas.

Famous was he throughout his life,

And even more renowned after death;

Mighty on earth was he,

And even more mighty is he in heaven.

Glowing spirit, pure heart,

He was a temple of the Living God;

For this the people glorify him

As a wondrous saint.

Nicholas, rich in glory,

Loves those who honor him as their Krsna Slava;

Before the throne of the eternal God,

He prays for their good.

O Nicholas, bless us,

Bless your people

Who, before God and before you,

Humbly stand in prayer.

Massive Crowds Turn Out To Protest B-Rock NObama's Falsified American Citizenship

NOOBZAMMMMAAFIFTEEN GAZILLION angry citizens swamped the steps of the Supreme Court this morning to protest the takeover of the government by the radical Islamic Indonesian bastard orphan and known Kenyan Hussein "Barack" Obama. Some nut recently filed a suit alleging that Obama wasn't born in Hawaii or somesuch, and so the Supreme Court agreed to review it, along with thousands of other cases they will also decide not to hear this session. A veritable handful of like-minded nuts decided to go to the Supreme Court in a dazzling show of support for this completely insane lawsuit.

Brave blogger "Nebaru" showed up, took photographs, and contacted your Wonkette with this stirring message: "I don't care if you rip the pictures off the blog and use them however you want." Hats off to you, kind citizen!

Behold the seething crowds, the media circus! The networks were all over this.

America will forever remember this day when a few valiant souls in furry hats stood around freezing their balls off, praying for Freedom.

Doctor Who 'Blink' weeping angel costume (dialup beware) - The RPF

I was lurking in the Hyatt corridor late at night in my Blink Angel, the better to terrify people with. I was standing in the weeping pose, holding absolutely still, when I heard a couple of people come by. They stopped and started whispering together, and then I heard someone come closer and felt a hand touch the 'stone' of my dress. I instantly spun around into 'attack' mode, whereupon the pretty woman who had been touching my dress let out a shriek and jumped back about ten feet. She and the man started laughing uproariously, and the man said that she was absolutely terrified by that episode would probably have nightmares now. They asked if I could pose with her for a picture like I was attacking her. I said sure and posed. They shouted, "Strangle her! Strangle me!", so I did. Funny photo, we all laughed, they went their way.

Apparently that was Jewel Staite from Firefly.

An Apollo 15 Panorama: Astronaut Exploring
What would it be like to explore the Moon?

NASA's
Apollo missions
gave humans just this chance in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

In particular, the Apollo 15 mission was dedicated to better understanding the surface of the
Moon by exploring mountains, valleys,

Astronauts David Scott and James Irwin spent nearly three days on the Moon while

The mission, which blasted off from Earth on 1971 July 26,
was the first to deploy a

Peculiar People

Having been bullied as a non-Mormon kid in Utah, my negatives for the church are extremely high.

Sent to you via Google Reader

Peculiar People

When I was growing up, a popular theme in church was the fact that we were a 'peculiar people', indicating a fulfillment of prophecy. What a lot of Mormons are not aware of is that Gordon B. Hinckley's life's work was to change all that. He understood that if the church seemed peculiar, it just made missionary work that much harder. You might call him the PR church president.

But it seems the rank and file of the church are not helping. A new book by LDS author Dr. Gary Lawrence shows why Hinckley, if not literally inspired, was certainly right. The Mormon church suffers from terrible negatives, and surprisingly, it has nothing to do with negative publicity about Mitt Romney or California's Prop 8 so much as, well, people just don't like them and because of "what are perceived as weird beliefs and secretiveness".

Thirty-seven percent [of those surveyed] have a favorable impression of us and 49 percent have an unfavorable impression". . .

It's even worse when compared with how Americans view other religions. The ratio for people who view those of the Jewish faith in a positive light is nearly 3.5-to-1; the same for Baptists. Catholics' enjoy a positive ratio of nearly 2-to-1; Mormons, less than 1-to-1.

"Thirty-seven percent of all Americans do not know a Mormon, 55 percent of all Americans do not know an active Mormon.

And probably the most telling fact of all:

. . . those who know one Mormon have a worse opinion of us than those who don't know any Mormons," Lawrence said.

Here in Utah, there is a lot of denial about this. Commenters on this blog have said that bad PR is a GOOD thing for the church (kind of a twist on there's no such thing as bad press, just spell the name right).

And before you attack me for hating the Mormon church (I don't, but you won't believe that), I'm just the messenger here. Here's a suggestion: Don't make every relationship about spreading the gospel. Try being friendly and interested in neighbors, co-workers, and even strangers just out of a simple love for and appreciation of people of the non-Mormon variety.

Bob Edwards: The President-Elect

Sent to you via Google Reader

Bob Edwards: The President-Elect

I want to preface these remarks by assuring my listeners that if President Obama makes one false move, my producers and I will hold him to account and scrutinize him with the same fervor as we have President Bush. Yes we will!

I've obviously had days to think about this remarkable moment in American history and all the things have been said by now. As Desmond Tutu said in the Washington Post on Sunday, November 9th, no one of my generation thought he'd see the end of the Soviet Union or the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as president of a post-apartheid South Africa--as he ranked the Obama achievement with those milestones. I have thought this over a lot and I always believed that a black candidate of Obama's qualities would emerge--I just never thought there'd be enough white people who would vote for such a person, and now I'm very proud and pleased to know differently. Yes, I know that Obama lost the white vote--but I also know that he wouldn't have won without the significant number of whites who voted for him. As we all know, vast numbers of white voters overcame age-old prejudices---for whatever reasons--to cast their first votes for an African-American.

I grew up in segregationist Louisville, Kentucky. Jim Crow is not a page in a history book to me--I was there and I lived it. When I was a little kid, my mother would take me on the bus to go downtown to shop in department stores where black people were not be allowed to try on the clothes for sale. Those stores had four restrooms and two water fountains. I was a little kid and couldn't read the signs that told me which restrooms and which water fountains were designated "colored." When I chose the "wrong" one I'd get a whipping.

I loved my father, but I was repulsed by his bigotry. He believed black people were not fully human. They were not black people to my father--they were niggers. That was a word he passed on to me and I had to un-learn it. For this I give thanks to my five-years-older brother Joe, who told me about this fellow named Martin Luther King back in the 1950's when we were both still children. Nowadays we talk about being "on the right side of history." Brother Joe and I chose to be there at the expense of our father's love. Dad would even race-bait me. We'd be watching the Ed Sullivan Show and when a black performer came on, he'd utter some racial epithet to provoke a response from me. Once I caught on, I'd deny him a reaction. And here's the great irony: If my father had been alive last Tuesday, he'd have voted for Barack Obama because he was a yellow-dog Democrat who voted for EVERY Democrat. I am not, and have voted for Republicans and Democrats.

White people who voted for Obama are in a self-congratulatory euphoria--and I will not disturb them from that. Obama made a lot of white conve...

Jeffrey Feldman: Election Brought Hard-Right Nationalism Into Light

While the 2008 election finished with a great celebration at the victory of Barack Obama, it also dragged a grisly hard-right nationalism into the bright light of American politics. The GOP had flirted with nationalism in the 1992 and 1996 Presidential bids of Pat Buchanan, but this time, the hard-right rhetoric of the McCain-Palin campaign shot through the Republican base with such an intensity that the Secret Service expressed concern. The rise of a hard-right nationalist front in the Republican Party goes far beyond the antics of Sarah Palin. Hard-right nationalism is a monster now fully emerged in America, and to ignore it or simply ridicule it would be a grave mistake and a missed opportunity.

Some political analysts would argue that the 1992 and 1996 presidential bids of Pat Buchanan brought a similar kind of hard-right nationalism to the main stage of American politics, and they would be correct. In both those campaigns as a Republican candidate, Buchanan argued that America was under attack from without and within, rallying to his side those Republican voters who saw the election of a candidate as the first step on the road to total defeat for America's enemies. For Buchanan, those enemies were defined in racial terms, but also in terms of gender and social issues. The threats Buchanan campaigned equally against included Latinos, homosexuals, and anyone who supported Roe v. Wade. But Buchanan lost and lost badly, and his ideas ultimately left him without any significant support in the GOP.

The McCain-Palin campaign succeeded at a level beyond Buchanan's wildest dreams by including several elements that took Buchanan's racist, sexist and protectionist nationalism and replaced it with a logic of political violence.

Where Buchanan argued that American was under social and cultural threat, McCain and Palin argued that their opponent presented a physical threat to every American's property and life. They did this in two ways: (1) by accusing Barack Obama of being a 'terrorist' and (2) by accusing Barack Obama of being a communist.

The result was startlingly effective.

In 1992 and 1996, the most devoted followers of Pat Buchanan had deep concerns about the Democratic Party and Republican Party candidates who did not stand up for 'conservative values.' In 2008, by contrast, the most devoted followers of John McCain and Sarah Palin had more than deep concerns about ideology--they were deathly afraid of Barack Obama himself.

According to a recent article by the Telegraph, one of the results of Sarah Palin's campaign speeches in particular, was a spike in death threats against Barack Obama. The sudden rise ...

Mario Ruiz: Gays Hit Back at Mormons

Mario Ruiz: Gays Hit Back at Mormons

Given their history, Mormons know about being targeted for being different. Yet in a full-on offensive, the LDS Church mobilized in favor of California's Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that bans gay marriage. Mormons donated $19 million to the cause -- nearly four out of five dollars raised. And now that the initiative has passed, apparently Mormons want to play nice; an LDS Church leader called Wednesday for members to heal rifts caused by the campaign by treating each other with "civility, with respect and with love."

Not. So. Fast. Gay people are fed up and have learned a thing or two about mobilizing themselves -- and not just for angry rallies. Some pro-Proposition 8 folks may come to regret their not so private support of hate. And were you thinking about skiing in Utah this year? Hmmm, Colorado's looking pretty appealing these days.

Yet somehow an economic boycott doesn't feel direct enough; those who team up against gay people must learn that there are consequences.

That's why we are seeking to strip the Mormon church of its status as a religious organization. According to IRS law, "no organization, including a church, may qualify for IRC section 501(c)(3) status if a substantial part of its activities is attempting to influence legislation (commonly known as lobbying)." [Emphasis added.]

Please join our efforts and show the world that gay people -- and their friends and families -- know how to hit back. Sign this petition to support the legal effort to strip the Mormon Church of its tax-exempt status.

Conclusive Proof That Polar Warming Is Being Caused By Humans

Sent to you via Google Reader

Conclusive Proof That Polar Warming Is Being Caused By Humans

New research by the University of East Anglia (UEA) has demonstrated for the first time that human activity is responsible for significant warming in both polar regions.

The findings by a team of scientists led by UEA's Climatic Research Unit was recently published online by the Nature Geoscience.

Previous studies have observed rises in both Arctic and Antarctic temperatures over recent decades but have not formally attributed the changes to human influence due to poor observation data and large natural variability. Moreover, the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had concluded that Antarctica was the only continent where human-induced temperature changes had yet to be detected.

Now, a newly updated data-set of land surface temperatures and simulations from four new climate models show that temperature rises in both polar regions are not consistent with natural climate variability alone and are directly attributable to human influence.

The results demonstrate that human activity has already caused significant warming, with impacts on polar biology, indigenous communities, ice-sheet mass balance and global sea level.

"This is an important work indeed," said Dr Alexey Karpechko of UEA's Climatic Research Unit.

"Arctic warming has previously been emphasized in several publications, although not formally attributed to human activity. However in Antarctica, such detection was so far precluded by insufficient data available. Moreover circulation changes caused by stratospheric ozone depletion opposed warming over most of Antarctica and made the detection even more difficult.

"Since the ozone layer is expected to recover in the future we may expect amplifying Antarctic warming in the coming years."

Authors of the article 'Attribution of polar warming to human influence' include Nathan Gillett (UEA/Environment Canada), Phil Jones (UEA), Alexey Karpechko (UEA), Daithi Stone (University of Oxford/Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research), Peter Scott (Met Office Hadley Centre), Toru Nozawa (National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan), Gabriele Hegerl (University of Edinburgh), and Michael Wehner (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, California).

How Obama sees religion's role

Sent to you via Google Reader

How Obama sees religion's role

Back in 2006 Barack Obama delivered his 'Call to Renewal' Keynote Address. It perhaps encapsulates his views on role of religion in politics. In our president-elect's own words:

Mr. Keyes's implicit accusation that I was not a true Christian nagged at me, and I was also aware that my answer did not adequately address the role my faith has in guiding my own values and my own beliefs.

Now, my dilemma was by no means unique. In a way, it reflected the broader debate we've been having in this country for the last thirty years over the role of religion in politics.

...

Democrats, for the most part, have taken the bait. At best, we may try to avoid the conversation about religious values altogether, fearful of offending anyone and claiming that - regardless of our personal beliefs - constitutional principles tie our hands. At worst, there are some liberals who dismiss religion in the public square as inherently irrational or intolerant, insisting on a caricature of religious Americans that paints them as fanatical, or thinking that the very word "Christian" describes one's political opponents, not people of faith.

Now, such strategies of avoidance may work for progressives when our opponent is Alan Keyes. But over the long haul, I think we make a mistake when we fail to acknowledge the power of faith in people's lives -- in the lives of the American people -- and I think it's time that we join a serious debate about how to reconcile faith with our modern, pluralistic democracy.

And if we're going to do that then we first need to understand that Americans are a religious people.

...

when we ignore the debate about what it means to be a good Christian or Muslim or Jew; when we discuss religion only in the negative sense of where or how it should not be practiced, rather than in the positive sense of what it tells us about our obligations towards one another; when we shy away from religious venues and religious broadcasts because we assume that we will be unwelcome - others will fill the vacuum, those with the most insular views of faith, or those who cynically use religion to justify partisan ends.

...

More fundamentally, the discomfort of some progressives with any hint of religion has often prevented us from effectively addressing issues in moral terms. Some of the problem here is rhetorical - if we scrub language of all religious content, we forfeit the imagery and terminology through which millions of Americans understand both their personal morality and social justice.

...

Our failure as progressives to tap into the moral underpinnings of the nation is not just rhetorical, though. Our fear of getting "preachy" may also lead us to discount the role that values and cult...

The GOP Meltdown Continues

It seems everybody is jumping aboard the Obama express. The latest: Ken Duberstein, Ronald Reagan's former chief of staff, offered his endorsement this morning.

After endorsing Obama, Duberstein appeared on MSNBC, where he launched into a full-fledged assault on John McCain's judgment for selecting Sarah Palin. It was a sight to behold, not just for the denunciation of John McCain, but also for the sheer joy of watching the collapse of the GOP coalition before our very eyes:
